Are you happy in your life?
I think that if you asked many people what their goal is in life apart from the obvious “things”, being happy would rank up at the top wouldn’t it?
In fact, if you look at all the other things in life that we accumulate, they are really just ways and means to make us happy.
Well it’s not the dollars in the bank; it’s what we do with those dollars…
The aim is to make us happy.
Bigger TV, car and house?
The end result is the same.
We are seeking happiness that those “items’ supposedly bring us
Lots of friends, travel and experiences?
It’s because we want to be happy.
So if we obtain all those things we are guaranteed happiness?
If we make a lot of money, drive a big car and have an amazing home will we be happy?
If we are in the right relationship will we be happy?
What about when we get that promotion? Will we be happy then?
Well, not entirely.
But lots of money can buy you a jet ski and have you ever seen anyone miserable on a jet ski?
Many of those accoutrements can put a smile on our face, but if we spend our life chasing those things, we very often find ourselves unhappy and unfulfilled.
There is always someone with more to compare yourself with and this can lead to unhappiness and unfulfillment
So what’s the key to happiness?
You don’t just accumulate “stuff” and suddenly become happy.
There are unhappy and even suicidal millionaires and billionaires in this world so we know that’s not true.
Most of us in this life want more don’t we?
All of those things are fun and there is nothing wrong with wanting to have, do and be more but I believe that accepting what you have at this moment in time is the key to lasting happiness.
I think we need to accept that happiness is all about the journey and not the destination.
I truly believe that we create our own happiness.
When we get up every day, we have a choice how we face the world.
Now I’m not saying that even in the midst of tragedy that you jump out of bed, grinning from ear to ear.
I mean that in day-to-day life, we choose how we see the world and how we react with the people in our lives.
We can see the glass half full or half empty.
What if despite what was going on in your life you could change your state so that you were pissed off for a bit but then could snap out of it and get back to being happy?
You are where you are in life right now because of the choices YOU made at some point in your life.
The great thing is that you have the ability to choose differently going forward.
We can choose to see the glass half empty which makes us feel unfulfilled and miserable, always looking for more.
OR…we can choose to see the glass half full which allows us to live openly with abundance, possibility and opportunity.
This ability to look at life from this perspective will see you on your way to a happy existence on this planet.
I’m all for ambition. I think it’s one of the best traits you can have.
I’m all for bettering oneself in every area of life, if that is your goal.
But achieving your goals won’t make you happy. Short term maybe but in the long term no.
I would advise that you should be happy right now in your pursuit of those goals.
Success is not the key to happiness…
…happiness is the key to success.
Have a great week.
